Gary Hull - Up North

Gary lives near Baudette, MN on the Canadian border. Gary has worked at the local electric cooperative for 25+ years. Living so close to the Rainy River and Lake of the Woods has provided an opportunity to do a lot of fishing and spearing over the years.

While there are people who spear on Lake of the Woods, they have found the water clarity not very suitable for spearing, so my houses are located on various bays along the Rainy River. Typical spearing depth is 6-8 feet depending on water clarity and current. The challenge on the waters here is the slot limit. Daily limit is 3, 1 can be over 40", but none may be taken between 30" - 40". We have been seeing large numbers of fish over the last couple years and while there are trophy fish coming in-most prefer the under 30" range. You might see an occasional walleye or perch, but this is pike territory!

Gary is a Four time National Fish Decoy Association carving champion and has carved hundreds of decoys. He has created many decoys for our use and adapted them to what the fish here seem to like the best, bright colors! These decoys are available for your use and may be purchased as well.
